This draft document is written in the tradition of Meyer Fortes, who insisted upon empirical evidence in order to generate analyses of society. It starts out of the moulds of understanding published in the classical volume “African Political Systems” (1940), written and edited by Meyer Fortes and Evans-Pritchard, which established the principles of segmentation and balanced interdependence, as the basic theoretical model, on which traditional African political systems have been built.
